Story of ‘The Broken News 2’

‘The Broken News’ Season 2 dives deeper into the chaotic world of news media. It emphasizes the conflict between the integrity of journalism on one hand and the fascination with sensational news on the other. Two years after the first season in the year 2022, ‘The Breaking News’ channel is reaching new heights. It is also a battle of ideologies for him, with two rival news channels, ‘Josh 24/7’ and ‘Awaaz Bharti’. In this fight, Amina Qureshi (Sonali Bendre), Dipankar Sanyal (Jaideep Ahlawat) and Radha Bhargava (Shriya Pilgaonkar) once again leave their impact. The characters of all three give a new dimension to this story.

The first season revealed the battle for prime time TRP. We saw there that Radha Bhargava is now in jail because of Dipankar Sanyal, who was also called a ‘traitor’ on national TV. This second season is the story of Radha’s life after imprisonment and her determination in the face of Dipankar’s manipulations. She fights for the truth as a victim of the system.

Moving beyond the newsroom, it has now become a fight for survival and dominance as well as revenge. Amina no longer agrees with Radha’s ideology. She believes that Radha is on a mission of revenge, which is contrary to the nature of journalism. But will Amina and Radha be able to work together or will Amina alone take up the responsibility of fighting for the truth? Will Dipankar realize his mistakes and have a change of heart, or will he continue his policies for TRP? To answer all these questions you will have to watch 8 episodes of this exciting series.

‘The Broken News 2’ web series review

Sambit Mishra is the writer of this series made under the direction of Vinay Vaykul. This second season is an interesting battle of ‘truth vs sensation’. Which has turned the conflict inside the newsroom into a personal fight. From the mid-day meal scam, the suicide of the Kadam family (almost based on the deaths in Burari) to cryptocurrency, power-hungry politicians, the series has covered many high-profile news stories.

Like the previous season, ‘The Broken News 2’ shows how news channels, instead of providing news, become judge, jury and executioner. In the race to break the news first, sometimes it is sensationalized without research and half-baked news is released to increase TRP. For example, in one scene Dipankar’s daughter asks him the truth behind the death of Pikachu (social media influencer), and he just keeps looking at her. The series shows how news spreads across the world without knowing the truth.

Sonali Bendre has done an excellent job in the role of the idealistic editor of ‘Awaaz Bharti’. The compassion and knowledge required for this character is reflected in him. But the real star of the series is Jaideep Ahlawat as Dipankar Sanyal. He is forced to continuously promote his ideology of ‘sensation’ to influence public opinion and advance his personal and corporate agenda. Jaideep Ahlawat brings confidence and ambition to every frame.

Shriya Pilgaonkar’s character Radha Bhargava is in a completely new avatar this time. What happened to him in prison has changed him. Be it being locked in a terrorist cell, being insulted by the police, especially when he was asked to take off his clothes, all this torments him. Radha is now on a mission of revenge to expose the truth about Dipankar Sanyal to the world. Shriya Pilgaonkar has portrayed this character on screen with great ease and excellence.

Unlike the last season, this time apart from the newsroom and meetings, space has also been given to the personal lives of the characters of the series. For example, Pankaj Awasthi (Indranil Sengupta) is going through a divorce and hopes to start a new life with Amina. The relationship between Dipankar and his wife Arunima (Sukhmani Sadhna) is also changing.

Apart from these, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya as Juhi Shergill, Faisal Rashid as Kamal Wadia, and Taruk Raina as Anuj Saxena reprise their roles as reporters and driving the story forward. The new cast includes Suchitra Pillai in the role of Ronnie (Akshay Oberoi), the new owner of ‘Awaaz Bharti’ and Meghna Rao, who becomes the voice of Nandan (Dinkar Sharma) in ‘Josh 24/7’. Apart from these, there is Page-3 reporter turned combative news anchor Rehana Liaquat, whose character has been played brilliantly by Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.

Overall, ‘The Broken News 2’ is woven with a mix of newsroom drama and revenge. It brilliantly shows the battle between journalistic ethics and sensationalism through power struggles and deception.
